The NYJCO is an Orchestra formed in September of 1978 by a group of NY veteran jazz musicians to direct their musical careers in a new direction. Also, to give the public a new sound of jazz from the jazz capital, New York City.
We created the instrumentation and the format of the ensemble. The search by the musicians was consummated by the composer arranger Greg Waters, when he came up with the unique instrumentation and format of his compositions and arrangements.The instrumentation has the musical range from bass to soprano, giving a total combination of all 5 ranges (bass, baritione, tenor, alto, and soprano). The instrumentation and format allows the ensembe to balance with the jazz solo. The orchestra has a deep full sound without the blare of the 8 brass from the big band, but we can still enjoy the mixing of the saxophones, trumpet and trombones with the traditional jazz four men rhythm section.We believe this orchestra is the most exciting musical event to come out of jazz in the last 30 years.
