OPEN LETTER AND REVIEW OF ACAPULCO MUSIC
Review by Greg Waters of music in hotels and restaurants.
There are restaurants, bars, clubs, night clubs, dining rooms, cante bars, pool rooms, concert halls, meeting rooms, social events, etc. and you have many of these type rooms in a hotel. There are many different kinds of musicians. But the different kinds of musicians are dance band musicians, club musicians
"rock", jazz musicians, Dixie, swing, modern, fusion, new music,
Latin fusion, Latin swing, Latin Cuban, Latin pop, Latin rock,
concert musicians, orchestral musicians, chamber musicians, opera
singers My point is that these musicians cannot play with one another they
all fit into a special spot, but a few musicians in NYC can play most of this kind of music very well, but they are the exception not the rule. Here in Acapulco the local musicians have a very limited ability. I find it difficult even to find a few good musicians.
A hotel is an generic place having no identity and trying to copy all
other hotels and services therefore providing the same services as all the other hotels it is really very boring if you think about it because they are all trying to do the same thing but each one maybe trying to do it better or for more or less money depending on the type of clients they are looking for. My point is that I think each hotel should try to develop their own space and identity which would include the kind of events they have.
So YOU want to bring different kinds of music into your place that is a good idea, but in a place that knows nothing really about what music is and really how it should be used and what clients will it attract. for I have found hotels use music for functional purposes and they are not really too interested in the quality of music they present. As long as no one complains as I see it.
The hotel may not like the clients that come to a particular kind of event. Just like the Homestead Hotel in Hot Springs Virginia took a stand on how their clients should act at their Hotel. I believe a hotel should take a stand on what kind of music they have.
The music they mostly have is background music that really is not noticeable, but this is not music nor is it a night club. For some reason hotels have a real problem with music because they do not really want it, the public does, though and they are caught in the middle of all this.
Background music is not music because people do not notice it or do not want to notice it. Music in a club, bar, concert hall, music restaurant, rock
club, dance hall, disco club, should be music people can notice and listen too. In NYC they have it all and I have played in all of them and that is why I went to NYC to learn what is American music or Western European Music to be more exact because it is all there in NYC and how does it function in society.
Acapulco is going through a change or development period now and
rebuilding itself and sort of looking in a small way how to improve things without really spending any money from what I gather. Companies invest in buildings more than they do in people I believe.
I came here to participate in this growth because there are a lot of people there in NYC with my knowledge, not a lot but enough, but there is not anybody as far as I can see it here in Acapulco like me with my knowledge and background.
So,What I can do for you?
I can bring groups in from NYC, Mexico City and my own small group
from Acapulco to the a hotel Or I can bring my friends from NYC whom I have worked with in the last twenty years or friends from Dallas Texas, a city with great musicians.
Musicians from here I can do duo, trios and quartet, bigger ensembles that you want to sound real professional I would have to import musicians from outside to play real live society music or dance music. The music I do is as follows.
light classical music
jazz styles
Latin jazz
swing jazz
modern jazz
concert jazz
new music
Latin jazz would be a five piece group to eight.
swing and modern jazz is a four piece group
society music is 4 to 8 musicians especially for parties, but this may have
to be musicians from NYC, but we could do a watered down version here.
I would like to play in a night club atmosphere were the musicians would be allowed to play at their volume where the people would be drinking only, no eating
I have performed in concerts, restaurants, clubs, private parties in NYC and Toronto. We could do a weekly TV broadcast too. I am a concert artist not a hotel musician in truth and a composer.
My music has been rated with all the great musicians in the world except I am just not a famous composer performer but I have the reviews.
I just received a review in the Sol de Acapulco Paper where they said my playing was solid gold which you could use for advertising in the local papers.
Please let me know what you would like to do? I am a first class NYC musicians and I hope you will treat me with that kind of respect and experience which I believe I deserve. My experience here, The Acapulco musicians do not know what to do with me? I have to make my own way with help from people like you.
